"Each note feels like a collaboration with Maggie, a woman I never met but whose spirit guided me through this 12-year journey. I hope this album speaks to you, inviting reflection on our shared history and the enduring power of courage and compassion. With gratitude, Valerie Smith"

Maggie’s Journal (Bell Buckle Records) is a profound and heartfelt musical narrative that brings to life the raw, emotional story of Margaret Attebury Brooks-McCamis, the great-grandmother of bluegrass luminary Valerie Smith. The result of a 12-year labor of love, this ambitious 30-track album blends roots, bluegrass, and Americana music to create a sonic tapestry that pairs original songs with spoken-word excerpts from Maggie's journal, a handwritten "Car Load Tablet," which Smith's cousins Fonda Wells and Kathy Eaton found hidden in an attic trunk. Unveiling a life untold, the journal reveals Maggie’s early years in post-Civil War rural Missouri—married young to a violent man, her hardened exterior masking a kind, gentle soul. Her story, personal and unflinching, is a masterpiece of resilience, offering timeless insights into American history, women’s and children’s rights, education, and the enduring human spirit. Crafted with deep reverence, Maggie’s Journal is in many ways a collaboration between Smith and her great-grandmother, whom she never met. From the haunting “That Was A Long Time Ago” to the tender “Alva’s Lullaby” and the stark “Jim O’Dell, Straight From Hell,” the album's tracks weave a narrative of struggle and grace, rooted in the storytelling traditions of folk and bluegrass. Smith’s evocative lead vocals, embodying Maggie’s voice, are complemented by rich harmonies from Donna Ulisse, Josie Smith, Mike Rogers, Rosa Vestal, and Aaron Vestal. The instrumentation—featuring Cody Kilby (acoustic guitar, mandolin), Stephen Burwell (violin), Evan Winsor (upright bass), and Scott Vestal (banjo)—pulses with life, capturing the raw emotion of Maggie’s world. Produced by Donna Ulisse, whose songwriting partnership with Smith (along with writers Daniel Crabtree and Ann Miller) shaped the album’s lyrical depth, Maggie’s Journal was masterfully recorded and engineered at Tim Carter’s Tree House Studio in Ridgetop, TN, and Scott Vestal’s Digital Underground in Greenbrier, TN. Smith’s artistry shines through, building on her legacy of Grammy, IBMA, and Dove Award nominations.

About the Song Louisa Branscomb strikes a chord in the heart of humanity with her new release, "Walking Each Other Home." Branscomb, iconic songmaker with two Song of the Year Awards, Grammies by Alison Krauss and John Denver, and countless hits in bluegrass, folk, roots, and Americana, is known for her ability to cut through the layers to evocative, elegant truths that leave us breathless, and changed. "Walking" leaves us staring at the reflection of elements that separate us, and those that transcend to bring us together. "Walking" is a powerful, Branscomb-esque song of hope and redemption. It is a song of songs, beautiful to the ear and hopeful to the heart.

"I was at a profoundly low point in the moment right before this song sprang into being,' Louisa says. "I was looking out over my stripped-naked, battered farm still torn up by the Cat 5 tornado -- even after 8 years grueling work to rebuild. I had lost a decade of years of human connection, time with friends, recording and my music career performing - the disaster took all of me. I was alone, as we all were, trying to save our homes. I looked up on the mountain and I saw this thin bent pine tree I'd tried to save and I thought, what can redeem all of this loss, destruction, and pain? At that moment, my heart broke for that tree, and tears poured out for the first time in 10 years. The tree was me. And as my heart broke, the words and melody came flooding through like water behind a dam. There's a bigger circle of truth: we are all walking each other home," we are all on this journey together. The love and compassion toward our fellow humankind, across what sets us apart, the that we are capable of in our best moments, and that is the most powerful thing there is. It can redeem this and more. From my perch on the hill I saw a vision, captured in Ram Dass saying,"We are all walking each other home." The song took about 25 minutes. Then I walked back down the mountain. I was able to go on." During Covid, and when Helene hit our town, this song became my sherpa, helping me carry the grief I felt for so many. It offered peace and solace in the midst of tragedy. Then, after a brush with death during surgery this year, I woke up thinking, it's time to release this song.

Song Bio In the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where bluegrass echoes through the hollers, Ralph Stanley II and The Clinch Mountain Boys are set to release their electrifying new single, "Polly's Revenge," on May 22, 2024. Premiering at the Ralph Stanley Hills of Home Festival, this powerful track breathes new life into the chilling traditional ballad "Pretty Polly," a cornerstone of Appalachian storytelling. With haunting melodies and razor-sharp harmonies, the band transforms a tale of betrayal into a saga of retribution, honoring the legacy of bluegrass icon Dr. Ralph Stanley while forging a path forward. The original "Pretty Polly" tells a grim story: a young woman lured to her death by a deceitful lover, her fate sealed in the dark woods. In "Polly's Revenge," written by David Carroll, the narrative shifts. Polly rises from her tragic end, a spectral force seeking justice. This bold reimagining pulses with themes of empowerment and redemption, giving voice to a character silenced for centuries. Ralph Stanley II’s soulful delivery, paired with The Clinch Mountain Boys’ masterful instrumentation, creates a sound that’s both timeless and urgently modern.

“Dad always told stories through song, and Polly’s Revenge carries that torch,” says Ralph Stanley II. “This is Polly’s story reclaimed—her strength, her fire. It’s what bluegrass does best: keeping the past alive while speaking to today.” As the son of Dr. Ralph Stanley, whose lonesome voice defined bluegrass for generations, Ralph II weaves tradition with innovation. The Clinch Mountain Boys—featuring Stanley Efaw (fiddle, mandolin, vocals), Randall Hibbitts (upright bass, vocals), and Curtis Coleman (banjo, vocals)—deliver a performance that honors the band’s 79-year legacy while pushing the genre’s boundaries. From the mournful cry of the fiddle to the driving pulse of the banjo, Polly’s Revenge is a testament to bluegrass music’s enduring power to tell stories that haunt and heal.

The single’s release coincides with the 2025 Ralph Stanley Hills of Home Festival (May 22–26) in McClure, Virginia, a celebration of music, heritage, and community. Fans can experience the live debut of Polly’s Revenge amidst the misty peaks of the Blue Ridge, where the Stanley family’s music was born. The track will be available on all streaming platforms, with exclusive early access at https://ralph2.com. Radio stations can request Polly’s Revenge via Stanley Records and Bell Buckle Media by contacting Valerie Smith at bellbucklerecords.com.
